The Ernies is an American alternative rock and ska band from Richmond, Virginia. The group formed in 1994 at Virginia Commonwealth University, with founding members Will Hummel, Tom Martin, Matt Goves, and Hayes Smith, and initially performed with a three-piece horn section. Their self-titled debut album was released on October 1, 1995, followed by Dropping Science on May 12, 1997. The band later signed with Mojo Records and released Meson Ray on April 20, 1999.
