The Dead C, a New Zealand-based music and art trio consisting of Bruce Russell, Michael Morley, and Robbie Yeats, formed in Dunedin in 1986 following Morleyâs previous project Wreck Small Speakers on Expensive Stereos. The Dead C released early albums such as DR503 and Eusa Kills on Flying Nun Records, followed by releases including Trapdoor Fucking Exit in 1990. Their international recognition grew through releases on the Philadelphia label Siltbreeze, notably with the 1992 double LP Harsh 70s Reality. Known for their improvised compositions and unconventional recording methods, The Dead C performed infrequently outside New Zealand but made notable appearances at festivals like All Tomorrowâs Parties in the US and UK. Their discography includes albums such as Tusk along with the compilation album Vain Erudite and Stupid: Selected Works 1987-2005. The group has been cited as an influence by various indie musicians, including Thurston Moore and Pavement.
