The Coull Quartet is an English string quartet that was founded in 1974 at the Royal Academy of Music in London. The founding members included Roger Coull on first violin, Philip Gallaway on second violin, Jonathan Barritt on viola, and Nicholas Roberts on cello. They were appointed as the quartet-in-residence at the University of Warwick in 1977. The ensemble has performed extensively throughout the United Kingdom and internationally, including tours of Western Europe, the Americas, Australia, and China. Their discography consists of more than 30 recordings featuring the complete string quartets of Felix Mendelssohn and Franz Schubert, as well as 20th-century and contemporary British chamber music. Their recording of quartets by Nicholas Maw and Benjamin Britten was described as a "Benchmark Recording" by BBC Music Magazine. They have commissioned works by composers including Robert Simpson, Sally Beamish, and Edward Cowie.
