Biography

The Carter Sisters was an American folk music group formed in March 1943. Consisting of Maybelle Carter and her daughters June Carter Cash, Helen Carter, and Anita Carter, they initially performed as The Carter Sisters and Mother Maybelle, debuting on WRNL in Richmond, Virginia. The group released their first record in February 1949 through RCA Victor Records. They were offered a job to perform at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville in June 1950 and officially became members in the early 1950s. They achieved notable success in the early 1970s, winning Favorite Country Vocal Group at the American Music Awards in 1973. June Carter Cash also had a solo hit in 1971 with "A Good Man".
