The 3rd and the Mortal, a Norwegian metal band formed in Trondheim in 1992 by Rune Hoemsnes, Finn Olav Holthe, Geir Nilssen, Trond Engum, and Kari RueslÃ¥tten. The group began as a doom metal act but quickly evolved into pioneers of gothic metal. Their first EP, Sorrow (1994), and debut album Tears Laid in Earth (1994) established them as leaders in the atmospheric metal genre, featuring RueslÃ¥tten's ethereal vocals. The latter album became a classic, influencing musicians like Tuomas Holopainen of Nightwish. In 1995, RueslÃ¥tten left to pursue solo projects and was replaced by Ann-Mari Edvardsen. With her, the band released Painting on Glass (1996) and In This Room (1997), which further explored experimental sounds. After a period of inactivity, The 3rd and the Mortal returned with Memoirs (2002), blending drum and bass, trip-hop, and experimental electronic jazz elements. The band disbanded in 2005 following a series of tours. In December 2024, the groupâs original lineup, featuring Bernt Rundberget and Kari RueslÃ¥tten, announced a reunion for a series of concerts held in 2025 and 2026.
