Emerging on the Christian rock scene in the mid-1990s under the name Chin Up, the San Diego-based California band took inspiration from a surfing icon for its new name, Switchfoot. Influenced by grunge, brothers Jon Foreman (vocals, guitar) and Tim Foreman (bass, vocals), accompanied by Jerome Fontamillas (guitar, keyboards) and Chad Butler (drums), play an alternative rock sound that they showcased on the albums The Legend of Chin (1997), New Way to Be Human (1999), and Learning to Breathe (2000), which was nominated for a Grammy Award in the Best Gospel Rock Album category. Signed to Red Ink Records, distributed by Columbia/Sony, Switchfoot worked with producer John Fields on The Beautiful Letdown (2003), which reached No. 1 on the Christian music charts, as did its follow-up, Nothing Is Sound (2005), which broke into the Billboard 200 at No. 3. In 2006, Steve Lillywhite took part in the recording of *Oh! Gravity, while Mike Elizondo produced Hello Hurricane (2009), which won a Grammy Award. Known for the songs âMeant to Liveâ (No. 18 in 2003) and âDare You to Move â (No. 17 in 2004), the band composed âThis Is Homeâ (2008) for the soundtrack of the film The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian. In 2011, they released Vice Verses (No. 8 on the Billboard 200), followed in 2014 by Fading West (No. 6), accompanied by a documentary film. They have reached No. 1 five times on the Christian rock singles chart and six times on the albums chart with Where the Light Shines Through in 2016 (No. 10 on the Billboard 200), Switchfoot signed with Fantasy Records for the albums Native Tongue (2019) and Interrobang (2021), as well as the EP Covers (2020), which features covers of songs by Vampire Weekend, Frank Ocean, and The Verve, before returning to independent status with This Is Our Christmas Album (2022) and the 2023 reissue of *The Beautiful Letdown* (Our Version), released on their own label, Lowercase People Records. A frequent winner at the Gospel Music Associationâs (GMA) Dove Awards, where they have received multiple annual awards, Switchfoot released their 14th album, Forever Now, in 2026, featuring catchy alternative melodies and driven by the singles âWake Up, Mr. Crowâ and âAbsolution.â
