Whereas most Christian pop groups muster up thoughts of happy-clappy tambourine sing-alongs and Kumbaya, P.O.D. share their message through raging metal licks, rap-rock rhymes and hardcore melodic breakdowns. Formed by born-again Christians Marcos Curiel (guitar) and Wuv Bernado (drums) in San Diego in 1992, the band was part of the post-grunge, alternative scene that saw Rage Against the Machine and Limp Bizkit start to mix hip hop, funk, punk and hard rock influences into a fierce, full throttle sound that soon became known as nu metal. Beginning as underground independent heroes, P.O.D. (Payable On Death) signed with Atlantic Records and made their breakthrough with the anthemic single âAliveâ and their fourth album Satellite (2001), which reached number 6 on the Billboard 200. The album was also an international hit, landing in the Top 10 in Germany, Ireland, New Zealand, and Sweden. Follow-ups Payable On Death (2003), Testify (2006), and When Angels & Serpents Dance (2008) all reached Number 9 in the US and the band became a hard rock institution, playing giant venues across the world. 2012âs Murdered Love continued their run of number 1 albums on the Christian Albums chart. The group followed that with The Awakening (2015) and Circles (2018). After a six year wait, P.O.D. returned with 2024âs Veritas, which was their first album released after the 2021 departure of founder member Wuv Bernardo. The album featured the singles âDrop,â âAfraid to Die,â âI Got That,â âLies We Tell Ourselves,â and âI Wonât Bow Down.â
