Biography

Susan Werner, born April 6, 1965, in Manchester, Iowa, is an American singer-songwriter. Werner earned degrees in voice from the University of Iowa and Temple University, initially aspiring to an opera career before shifting to songwriting after seeing Nanci Griffith perform. Werner gained recognition in the folk scene during the early 1990s, releasing a debut album Midwestern Saturday Night (1993). Subsequent albums included Last of the Good Straight Girls (1995), Time Between Trains (1998), and New Non-Fiction (2001). In 2004, Werner released I Can't Be New (2004), marking a departure into Tin Pan Alley and early jazz styles. A 2007 album, The Gospel Truth (2007), explored themes of religion and social responsibility, with Tom Jones covering "Did Trouble Me" from this album in his release Praise & Blame (2010). The discography of Werner also included Hayseed (2013), a concept album about farms and farmers, and Flyover Country (2020).
