Biography

Stian Carstensen, born on January 5, 1971, in Eidsvoll, Norway, is a Norwegian multi-instrumentalist and composer. He began playing the accordion at age nine, initially learning from his father before studying with a classical player for four years. In 1991, he enrolled in the Jazz Program at the Trondheim Musikkonservatorium, where he formed the Balkan-jazz orchestra Farmers Market. The group gained recognition with their album Speed/Balkan/Boogie (1995), recorded live at the Molde International Jazz Festival in Norway. Carstensen's dedication to Bulgarian music led to extensive tours and collaborations with musicians from Bulgaria and Romania. In 1997, Farmers Market released Musikk Fra Hybridene. His solo album Backwards Into the Backwoods was released in 2004, followed by Musical Sanatorium in 2021.
