The Russian Jazz Quartet was a jazz ensemble founded in 1964 by Boris Midney, a saxophonist and clarinetist from the Soviet Union. The group also included double bassist Igor Berukshtis, who defected with Midney through a US Embassy while visiting Japan. New Yorkers Roger Kellaway and Grady Tate were also part of the ensemble. Inspired by the Modern Jazz Quartet, they recorded their debut album Happiness, released by Impulse! in 1965. The album received critical acclaim, earning a rating of three-and-a-half out of five stars from Down Beat. Midney went on to have success as a producer, composer, and conductor in the United States. Berukshtis later became a teacher and broadcast jazz commentary on Radio Liberty.
