Biography

Steve Swell (born December 6, 1954) is an American free jazz trombonist, composer, and educator from Newark, New Jersey. Swell began playing trombone at age ten and studied at Jersey City State Teachers College under Roswell Rudd. In 1975, Swell relocated to New York City, performing with the big bands of Lionel Hampton and Buddy Rich and in the Broadway production Dancin’. Swell released his debut album, Observations, in 1996. His discography includes Invisible Cities (2004), Soul Travelers (2016), The Center Will Hold (2020), and For the People of the Open Heart (2023). Swell collaborated with Tim Berne’s Caos Totale, Cecil Taylor’s Orchestra Humane, and Jemeel Moondoc’s Jus Grew Orchestra. He leads ensembles including Slammin’ the Infinite and Nation of We. Swell earned a Bachelor of Arts from the State University of New York in 2016. His awards include a 2006 USArts International grant and multiple nominations for Trombonist of the Year.
