Steve Masakowski, born September 2, 1954, in New Orleans, Louisiana, is an American jazz guitarist and educator. Influenced by The Beatles, he began playing bass guitar at age fourteen and co-founded the band Truth. In 1974, he attended the Berklee College of Music to study music theory, arranging, and composition. From 1976 to 1978, he studied classical composition and orchestration with Bert Braud at the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts. In the early 1980s, he played regularly with local New Orleans musicians and formed the band Mars, which released their debut album in 1983 featuring Dave Liebman. He joined Astral Project in 1987 and toured with singer Dianne Reeves from 1993 to 1996. Masakowski released several solo albums, including What It Was (1994) and Direct AXEcess (1995), both on Blue Note Records. He was recognized by the Down Beat International Critics Poll in 1999.
