Biography

Stephen John Magnusson, born on 13 February 1969 in Australia, is a guitarist known for his work as an improviser. He began playing musical instruments at age three when given a ukulele and started performing on electric guitar at ten. Magnusson studied improvisation under Gordon Pendelton at Box Hill TAFE in 1985 and later at the Victorian College of the Arts under Tony Gould, Bob Sedergreen, and Paul Grabowsky. In the mid-1990s, he traveled to Europe, collaborating with musicians across Switzerland, Germany, Bulgaria, and the Netherlands. He formed the group SNAG with Sergio Beresovsky and Björn Meyer, joined by Julien Wilson, releasing their self-titled album Hey Guess What in 1997. Magnusson returned to Melbourne in 2000 and won the National Jazz Award at the Wangaratta Festival of Jazz that year. He won the Melbourne Prize for Music Outstanding Musician Award in 2013.
