Biography

Jazz vibraphonist and percussionist Stefon Harris was born on March 23, 1973 in Albany, New York. Originally, his plan was to work for the New York Philharmonic but then he was introduced to the world of jazz when he first heard Charlie Parker. In the 1990s, he began his career as a studio musician and recorded with Charlie Hunter and Steve Turre. Harris signed with Blue Note Records and released his debut solo album, A Cloud of Red Dust, in 1998. His second album, 1999’s Black Action Figure, was nominated for a Grammy. In 2001, he played the Village Vanguard in New York City with pianist Jacky Terrasson. Harris continued to gain praise for his solo albums including The Grand Unification Theory (2003), African Tarantella: Dances With Duke (2006), and Urbanus (2009). He joined up with David Sánchez and Christian Scott in 2011 and recorded the album Ninety Miles in Havana, Cuba. Harris released the album Sonic Creed in 2018.
