Biography

Christian Scott (also known by his adopted West African name, Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah) is an American jazz trumpeter and composer known for pushing the edges of the genre and incorporating elements of modal jazz, post-rock, electric fusion and hip-hop into his playing. Born in New Orleans in 1983, Scott began learning to play music under the tutelage of his uncle, jazz saxophonist Donald Harrison. That led him to the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA) to extend his studies and from there he earned a scholarship to Berklee College of Music in Boston. While there he played in the Berklee Monterey Quartet and recorded with the Art:21 student quintet. Scott made his major label solo debut two years after graduating, releasing 2006's 'Rewind That' through Concord Jazz. The record blended elements of R&B and rock into its core jazz sound and picked up a Grammy nomination. Between 2006 and 2019 Scott led on 12 studio albums and made a host of appearances on other records. He won the Edison Award in both 2010 and 2012 and picked up further Grammy nominations for 2017's 'The Emancipation Procrastination' and 2019's 'Ancestral Recall'.
