Biography

Son of saxophonist Dewey Redman (1931-2006), Joshua Redman follows in his father's footsteps, establishing himself as one of the most gifted musicians of his generation. Born in Berkeley, California, on February 1, 1969, the Harvard University graduate also brilliantly passed the 1991 Thelonious Monk Institute competition. His career was launched with a Grammy-nominated untitled album, and continued with a quartet featuring Pat Metheny, Charlie Haden and Billy Higgins for the Wish sessions (1993). After collaborating with his father and Elvin Jones, the saxophonist took part in the formation of the SF Jazz Collective, which he led from 2000 to 2007. At the same time, he formed the Elastic Band for a recording on the Nonesuch label, Elastic (2002), with Sam Yahel and Brian Blade. The same label released Yaya3's only album. After appearing in the film Blues Brothers 2000, Redman went on to record the Grammy-nominated albums Momentum (2005) and Back East (2007) with his band, followed by the double trio Compass (2009). He then formed the James Farm collective with Aaron Parks, Matt Penman and Eric Harland, whose homonymous debut album was released in 2011, followed three years later by City Folk. In between came the interlude of the ballad album Walking Shadows (2013) with Brad Mehldau, with whom he also produced Nearness (2016), after a collaboration with the band The Bad Plus. Three albums with different formations follow: Still Dreaming (2018), Come What May (2019) and RoundAgain (2020), the latter in a super quartet with Mehldau, Christian McBride and Brian Blade. The latter takes part in the following album Where Are We (2023), alongside Joe Sanders, Aaron Parks and singer Gabrielle Cavassa. In 2025, a new quartet featuring Paul Cornish, Philip Norris and Nazir Ebo recorded Words Fall Short.
