Ralph Ernest Newton, known professionally as Slim Newton, was born on October 22, 1932, in Perth, Australia. He began his career as a country music singer-songwriter at age 17 while working as an apprentice welder. In June 1972, Newton released the extended play The Redback on the Toilet Seat, which peaked at number 3 on the Go-Set National Top 40 Singles Chart and sold over 100,000 copies. The following year, he won a Golden Guitar Trophy at the inaugural Country Music Awards of Australia for Top Selling Record. Newton was inducted into the Australasian Country Music Hands of Fame in 1977 and the Australian Roll of Renown in 2009. He died on January 8, 2023, at the age of 90.
