Biography
Skank, formed in 1991 in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, began as a local ensemble led by guitarist and vocalist Samuel Rosa, keyboardist Henrique Portugal, bassist Lelo Zaneti, and drummer Haroldo Ferretti; the group released their independent selfâtitled album Skank in 1992, which sold 1,200 copies in 45 days and attracted Sony Musicâs interest, leading to a contract with the Chaos label. The debut albumâs singles, "O Homem Que Sabia Demais" and "Tanto", propelled the band onto a national tour, and the followâup album Calango (1994) produced hits such as "à Proibido Fumar" and "Jackie Tequila", achieving 1,200,000 sales. In 1996, O Samba Poconé yielded the international success of "Garota Nacional", which topped Spanish charts for three months, and the track "à Uma Partida de Futebol" was featured on the FIFA 1998 World Cup soundtrack. Subsequent releases-including Siderado (1998), Maquinarama (2000), and Cosmotron (2003), the latter earning a Latin Grammy for Best Brazilian Rock Album in 2004-expanded Skankâs repertoire into a more rockâoriented style, while live albums such as MTV ao Vivo: Skank (2001) captured their concert presence. The band continued touring internationally, performing at festivals like Montreux Jazz and Rock in Rio, and released Estandarte (2008) and Velocia (2014) before disbanding; their final performance occurred on 26 March 2023 at Mineirão, where they closed their career with a farewell concert that was recorded for a live release.
