Biography
Conductor and choirmaster, Simon-Pierre Bestion is the founder of the ensemble La Tempête in 2015. Born in Rodez, France, on March 9, 1988, Simon-Pierre Bestion de Camboulas grew up in the Vendée region, taking organ lessons with Abel Gaborit, while participating with his four brothers, including organist and harpsichordist Louis-Noël, in puppet shows organized by his parents. He continued his organ studies in Nantes with Michel Bourcier and learned harpsichord in Paris, before reaching the final of the Concours international d'orgue de Béthune in 2006. The musician then turned to choral conducting, first in Nantes and then in Lyon, and in 2007 formed the Europa Barocca ensemble and the Luce Del Canto choir, which led to the creation of the La Tempête ensemble in 2015. From then on, Simon-Pierre Bestion has put his own stamp on the early music repertoire, opting for a faithful retranscription of choral works, or their combination with modern compositions, as in Azahar (2017), which combines pieces by Alfonso X, Guillaume de Machaut, Stravinsky and Maurice Ohana. He then conducts the album Larmes de Résurrection (2018), followed by Vespro for Monteverdi's Vespers to the Virgin Mary (2019), the recital Hypnos after various composers of the 16th and 20th centuries (2022), then Rachmaninov's Vespers (2022) and Bach Minimalist (2023), which links pieces by the Baroque composer with minimalist scores by Górecki, Nystedt or John Adams. In 2024, Stabat Mater brings together the two homonymous sacred works by Domenico Scarlatti and DvoÅák.
