Biography
Silvia Droste, born 21 May 1960 in Herne, is a German jazz singer and saxophonist. She began playing saxophone at age 14 and established a reputation in the 1980s performing with ensembles led by Acker Bilk, Chris Barber, and the Dutch Swing College Band. In 1983, Droste won first prize at the âJugend jazztâ competition while studying at Ruhr University Bochum. She formed the quartet Voicings in 1984, exploring swing and bebop styles. Drosteâs recording career began with the album Audiophile Voicings (1987), which received the Vierteljahrespreis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik. Her discography included Stardust Memories (1989), Seize the Day (1994), and Piano Portraits (2005). Between 1987 and 1990, she moderated jazz programs for Radio Saarland and the ZDF Jazz Club. Droste established a reputation for collaborations with Jerry van Rooyen, Art Farmer, and Charly Antolini. In 1993, she was appointed a jazz vocal instructor at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen.
