Biography

Michelle Yvette Lares (performing as Shelly Lares; born November 13, 1971) is an American Tejano and country singer-songwriter, guitarist, and percussionist from San Antonio, Texas. Lares founded The New Generation Band in 1985 with cousin Tony Lares. In 1986, Lares signed with Manny Records, releasing the debut album Tú solo tú (1989). Lares received thirteen consecutive nominations for Female Vocalist of the Year at the Tejano Music Awards beginning in 1984. In 1996, Lares signed with Sony Music Latin, releasing the self-titled album Shelly, which peaked at number 35 on the Billboard Top Latin Albums chart. The lead single, “Siempre Lo Esperare”, reached number 30 on the Hot Latin Tracks chart. Subsequent recordings include Mil Besos (2000) and Renacer (2012). In 2005, Lares won Female Vocalist of the Year and Entertainer of the Year. Lares publicly identified as a member of the LGBTQ community in 2008. Lares operates the record label Shellshock Records 3, producing for artists including Allie and Keana Huerta.
