Biography

Jean-Eudes Bourdages-Aster (born in Maliotenam, Quebec), known professionally as Shauit, was a Canadian singer-songwriter who merged traditional Innu music with reggae, pop-rock, and folk. Shauit was raised as a francophone but learned the Innu-aimun language as a teenager to reconnect with his heritage. He initially rose to prominence as a frequent collaborator with the rapper Samian. Shauit released his self-titled debut EP in 2014 and his first full-length album, Apu peikussiakᵘ, in 2017 under the Pasa Musik label. The album featured the recording “Tshin an nitauassim”. He performed over 400 times across countries including Japan, South Korea, and France, appearing at events such as WOMEX and Folk Alliance. His second album, Natukun (2023), received the Félix Award for Album of the Year – Indigenous Languages at the ADISQ Gala. Shauit also won the Canadian Folk Music Award for Indigenous Songwriter of the Year in 2018.
