Biography

Country music superstar Shania Twain – born Eileen Edwards on August 28, 1965, in Windsor, Ontario, Canada - had a tough upbringing in Timmins, Ontario; living for a while in a homeless shelter and singing in local bars from an early age trying to make ends meet. When her mother and stepfather were killed in a car crash, she stayed home to look after her younger siblings but eventually resumed her singing career with a name change to Shania (an Ojibwa Indian word for ‘on my way’), releasing her self-titled debut album in 1993. Her big break came when she started writing songs with rock producer Mutt Lange - later her husband - who produced her breakthrough second album The Woman in Me in 1995. The follow-up, Come On Over (1997), established her as a major country-rock crossover act, topping the album charts in the UK and US and producing the smash hits “That Don't Impress Me Much” and “Man! I Feel Like a Woman.” More hits followed into the late 1990s including “You're Still the One” and “From This Moment On,” and into the 2000s with “Forever and for Always,” “I'm Gonna Getcha Good!,” “Up,” and “Ka-Ching!” Her Greatest Hits album was released in 2004 and featured three brand new tracks. After the break-up of her marriage in 2008, Shania Twain announced that her next album would be delayed while she sorted out things in her personal life. Her first single in six years, “Today Is Your Day,” came in 2011 along with the announcement that she was commencing a two-year headline gig at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas, Nevada. She began work on her fifth album and, in 2015, announced that she was embarking on her first tour in more than a decade. “Life's About to Get Good” was released as the lead single to her fifth album, Now (2017), and was followed by the single “Swingin' with My Eyes Closed.” A documentary on the life of Shania Twain, Not Just a Girl, premiered on Netflix in 2022 and was accompanied by the soundtrack Not Just a Girl (The Highlights), which featured 18 tracks spanning her entire career. Preceded by the singles "Waking Up Dreaming" and "Giddy Up!," her sixth studio album, Queen of Me, appeared in 2023 via Republic Records. Shania Twain has sold over 100 million albums worldwide and is the first artist (and the only woman) to have three RIAA-certified Diamond albums.
