Seppo Toivo Juhani "Paroni" Paakkunainen, born on October 24, 1943, in Tuusula, Finland, is a Finnish saxophonist. He studied flute at the Sibelius Academy and later took up the baritone saxophone after seeing Lars Gullin perform. Paakkunainen's early recordings with Teemu Hauta-Aho and Ek Lönnqvist marked his entry into free music. In 1968, he won a jazz competition in Sofia with the group Soulset. The following year, he formed the Tuohi Quartet, which won the EBU Jazz Band Competition at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1971. Paakkunainen's career includes notable collaborations and performances, such as his work with George Gruntz Concert Jazz Band, which led to a performance at New Yorkâs Carnegie Hall. He also founded and led several ensembles, including Karelia, Conjunto Baron, and Saxperiments, each blending various musical styles with jazz. Notable works include the composition Nunnu (released as an LP in 1972) and the album Baritone (2002).
