Biography

Rumillajta is a Bolivian folk music group formed in La Paz in 1980 by Juan Jorge Laura Quisbert. The ensemble's work addresses themes of nature, indigenous rights, and foreign exploitation. Their early albums include Pueblo de Piedra (1981) and Tierra Mestiza (1983). The group achieved international prominence following the 1984 releases of City of Stone and Hoja de Coca, performing on festival circuits across Asia, Europe, and the Americas. Their subsequent albums include Pachamama (1986) and Wiracocha (1987). In 1989, they performed in Central Park, New York City, as part of the Naumburg Orchestral Concerts, and they also appeared in a BBC documentary.
