Rodrigo Alejandro Bueno (May 24, 1973 â June 24, 2000), affectionately known as âEl Potro,â was an Argentine singer who transformed cuarteto into a national phenomenon. Born in Córdoba to a musical familyâhis father Eduardo was a record producer and his mother Beatriz a songwriter and kiosk ownerâRodrigo first performed publicly at age two and released a childrenâs album at five. By his teens he had joined local bands and adopted a solo path, eventually signing with PolyGram and releasing early albums like La Foto de tu Cuerpo (1987) and Aprendiendo a Vivir (1989). In 1995 he signed with Sony Music and recorded Sabroso, before fully committing to cuarteto under Magenta Records in 1996. His breakthrough arrived that year with Lo Mejor del Amor, whose title track became a national radio sensation and earned him a prestigious ACE Award. He followed with the live gold-certified album La Leyenda Continúa in 1997, and Cuarteteando in 1998, featuring hits like âOcho Cuarentaâ and âY voló, voló.â Rodrigoâs 1999 concert album A 2000ârecorded live and later certified quadruple platinumâspurred the massive âCuarteto CaracterÃstico Rodrigo A 2000â shows, including thirteen soldâout nights at Buenos Airesâs Luna Park and an unforgettable 49âshow summer tour that drew over 100,000 fans in Mar del Plata. His dynamic energy, short dyed hair, blueâcrowned boots, and affinity for bold gestures set him apart from the flamboyant styles of other tropical acts. Though his life ended tragically in a car accident in midâ2000, Rodrigoâs legacy endures: he propelled cuarteto from regional Córdoba parties into mainstream Argentina, inspired posthumous tributes and films like El Potro, lo mejor del amor (2018), and was posthumously awarded multiple Carlos Gardel and Konex accolades. His hits such as âLa mano de Diosâ and âSoy Cordobésâ remain staples of the genre, and generations later he is still revered as the king of cuarteto.
