Biography

The British songwriter RJ Thompson found commercial success in 2020, when his sophomore album Lifeline reached the Top 5 on the UK charts. He was born 35 years earlier on June 25, 1985, in Bishop Auckland, England. By the early 2000s, he was playing local shows in northern England and working on a number of demos, which he compiled together on the 2006 record Illogical Life. Billed as a "demo album," Illogical Life was followed by a trio of EPs: Acoustic Sessions, which appeared in June 2007; The Cognitive Rules, which arrived in December 2011; and House Upon the Hill, which was released to critical acclaim in November 2014. To promote House Upon the Hill, Thompson served as Jools Holland's opening act on a tour that included shows at the Royal Albert Hall and Birmingham's Symphony Hall. Portions of that tour were document on his first concert album, Live, which which released in 2016. His first full-length studio record, Echo Chamber, followed in 2017. Lifeline, Thompson's second album, appeared in digital form in late 2020, with a physical release following in early 2021. The record proved to be his most successful, reaching Number 5 on the Official Albums Chart in the UK and Number 3 in Scotland. Continuing to tour and record new music, he remanned in the Top 40 with his third LP, Yearbook, which he released in October 2022.
