Easy listening/classical/new age pianist Richard Clayderman was born Philippe Pagès on December 28, 1953 in Paris, France. Since the release of his self-titled debut album and âBallade Pour Adelineâ single in 1977, he has sold well over 150 million records and has nearly 300 gold and 70 platinum albums to his name. His career began at the age of 12 when he was accepted into the Conservatoire de Paris. Due to financial difficulties, his career as a classical pianist was cut short. He then worked a day job and spent his spare time playing piano for other artists including Johnny Hallyday, Michel Sardou, and Thierry Le Luron. Clayderman was invited by French producer Olivier Toussaint to audition as the pianist for a song that he wrote for his daughter. Passing the audition, Clayderman recorded the song (âBallade pour Adelineâ), which went on to sell 22 million copies in 38 countries. He perfected a romantic style of playing that appealed to fans of all ages. From classical compositions to modern romantic pop hits like âFeelingsâ, âMy Wayâ, âAnd I Love You Soâ, and âCanadian Sunsetâ among many others. Since his â77 debut album he has continued to release over 84 studio albums and many more compilations. His popularity has remained particularly strong in Asia, although he has a large fanbase across Europe. In 2014, he released the album Romantique.
