Biography

Rex William Stewart Jr., born on February 22, 1907, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was an American jazz cornetist. He began his career playing piano and violin before focusing on the cornet. Stewart started professionally with the Ragtime Clowns led by Ollie Blackwell and later played with bands including those led by Willie Lewis, Elmer Snowden, Horace Henderson, Fletcher Henderson, Fess Williams, and McKinney's Cotton Pickers. In 1934, he joined Duke Ellington’s orchestra, co-writing songs like "Boy Meets Horn" and "Morning Glory". Stewart left Ellington in 1945 to lead smaller swing bands and toured with Jazz at the Philharmonic from 1947 to 1951. He worked in radio and television in the early 1950s, contributing jazz criticism for publications like Playboy and DownBeat. Stewart died of a brain hemorrhage on September 7, 1967, in Los Angeles, California.
