Biography

The female counterpart to Cheikh Raymond, Reinette l'Oranaise is the "little queen" of the hawzi style and Judeo-Arabic song. A star at the age of twenty-six thanks to her appearances on Radio Alger, Reinette l'Oranaise fell into oblivion after Algerian independence in 1962 and her forced exile in France. It wasn't until 1985 that she made a fleeting return to the stage, and 1995 that Reinette l'Oranaise was awarded a prize by the Académie Charles Cros. Reinette l'Oranaise passed away on November 17, 1998, leaving behind a number of rare 78s and the compilations Trésor de la chanson Judéo-Arabe (2006) and Patrimoine Musical (2012).
