Red Box, a British band formed in England in 1983, was founded by Simon Toulson-Clarke and Julian Close. The group initially performed under the name Harlequins before adopting Red Box after finding a box left behind by Slade. Their early influences included Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Marc Bolan, David Bowie, Cream, Pink Floyd, Cat Stevens, and Buffy Sainte-Marie. In 1983, they released their debut single "Chenko" on the Cherry Red label, which gained radio attention and led to a signing with Sire Records in 1984. The band's breakthrough came in August 1985 with the release of "Lean On Me (Ah-Li-Ayo)", which reached number 3 in the UK top 40 and topped charts in five countries. Their debut album, The Circle & the Square, was released in 1986 and included hits like "For America", which peaked at number 10 in the UK. The album blended traditional musical styles with modern rock and synthpop, featuring collaborations with Anthony Head on vocals. In 1990, Red Box returned with the single "Train" and the second album Motive. They released their third album Plenty in October 2010, followed by Chase the Setting Sun in September 2019, which included singles like "This Is What We Came For" and "Gods & Kings".
