Rainer Tempel, born in 1971 in Tübingen, Germany, is a German jazz pianist, composer, and bandleader. He began learning classical piano in Mössingen and later formed rock bands during his school years. In the mid-1980s, Tempel gained his first exposure to jazz through membership in a big band and combo of the Mössingen Youth Music School. His career took a significant turn when he joined the University Big Band Tübingen under Bobby Burgess in 1993. Throughout his career, Tempel has led several jazz formations and composed extensively for various ensembles, including the NDR Big Band and hr-Bigband. He has collaborated with notable musicians such as Matthias Erlewein, Joo Kraus, and Fola Dada. He has been recognized with the Baden-Württemberg Jazz Prize in 2002. In 2009, he released the album Tempelektrisch.
