Biography

Anja Käckenmeister, known professionally as Pyranja, was born in 1978 in Rostock, Germany, and works as a rapper and singer. Growing up with her brother in Rostock, she attended high school there and began engaging with hip‑hop culture at the age of twelve through breakdance; by sixteen she had written her first rap lyrics and performed publicly a year later. Her breakthrough came with the release of the Im Kreis EP in 2001, followed by the single "Reine Nervensache" in 2002. Pyranja’s debut studio album Wurzeln & Flügel was issued in 2003 on Dackel Enterprise after an earlier contract with Def Jam Germany was dissolved following a corporate merger. In 2004 she founded her independent label Pyranja Records and released Frauen & Technik, an album that originated as a mixtape. The 2006 single "Nie Wieder" reached number 87 on the German singles chart and earned her eighth place at the Bundesvision Song Contest representing Mecklenburg‑Vorpommern. That same year the album Laut & Leise was released, expanding her musical range. Subsequent releases include the 2011 Retro Tape 1 and the 2017 Overkill. Throughout her career Pyranja collaborated with artists such as Joe Rilla, Dra‑Q, and the Ostblokk collective, and she participated in the anti‑NPD event Laut gegen Rechts in 2006. Her work remained influential within German rap, noted for its candid exploration of female perspectives in the genre.
