PRODUCE 101 is a South Korean reality competition show created by Mnet, premiering on January 22, 2016. The concept involved audience participation in selecting the final group's members, debut song, and name from 101 contestants representing various entertainment companies. Produced in collaboration with 46 entertainment agencies, the first season featured female contestants, with the top 11 forming the girl group I.O.I. The show began with the unveiling of 98 contestants on December 17, 2015, performing "Pick Me" on M Countdown. Viewers voted for their favorite contestants through online and live voting systems, determining the final lineup. The debut EP PRODUCE 101 â 35 Girls 5 Concepts was released on March 19, 2016, featuring the song "Pick Me". I.O.I debuted with a unique concept and promoted together for a year under Stone Music Entertainment before disbanding in January 2017. The second season of PRODUCE 101 premiered on April 7, 2017, this time featuring male contestants and resulting in the formation of Wanna One.
