Nicolas Mbarga, known as Prince Nico Mbarga, was a Nigerian singer born on January 1, 1950, in Abakaliki. He developed an early passion for highlife music after his father brought home a secondhand radio. Mbarga formed Rocafil Jazz and debuted professionally with the Melody Orchestra in 1970. His breakthrough came in 1976 with "Sweet Mother", which became one of the best-selling songs by an African recording artist, selling over 13 million copies. Between 1975 and 1981, Mbarga and Rocafil Jazz recorded several albums under Rogers All Stars. He died in a motorcycle accident on June 23, 1997. "Sweet Mother" has become a cultural milestone, often referred to as Africa's anthem and voted Africa's favorite song by BBC readers and listeners.
