Biography

Chief Stephen Osita Osadebe, born on March 17, 1936, in Atani, Nigeria, was a Nigerian singer-songwriter known for his contributions to Igbo highlife music. He began his career singing at nightclubs in Lagos State, mentored by Trumpeter Zeal Onyia and honing his skills with The Empire Rhythm Orchestra led by E.C. Arinze. Osadebe released his first album in 1958 and went on to write over 500 songs, half of which were commercially released. His breakthrough came with the 1984 single "Osondi Owendi", one of Nigeria's most popular records. Notable albums include Osadebe in London (1975), Ndi ochongonoko (1986), and Kedu America (1996). Osadebe was known for his social commentary and extended tracks that allowed audiences to enjoy the music fully. He died on May 11, 2007, in St. Mary's Hospital Waterbury, Connecticut.
