Biography

Emmanuel Tettey Mensah, known professionally as E.T. Mensah, was born on May 31, 1919, in Accra, Gold Coast, and was a Ghanaian musician. He began his musical journey at the age of 12, playing flute in the Government School band. In 1947, he joined The Tempos, an all-African band that had initially started as a jam session group with European soldiers. Mensah became the leader of The Tempos, and the band gained international attention, performing with notable artists such as Louis Armstrong in 1957. Throughout his career, Mensah released several albums including E.T. Mensah (1975) and All For You (1986). Despite the decline of highlife music in the 1960s, Mensah remained active until his death on July 19, 1996.
