Biography
Pilar Lorengar (born Lorenza Pilar GarcÃa Seta) was a Spanish classical, opera, and zarzuela soprano from Zaragoza. Lorengar performed on the radio program Ondas Infantiles at a young age and began professional performances in 1950 in the title role of Maruxa in Oran. The singer's international career began in 1955 at the Festival international d'art lyrique d'Aix-en-Provence as Cherubino in Les Noces de Figaro. The soprano performed at venues including Covent Garden and the Teatro Colón before beginning a thirty-year association with the Deutsche Oper Berlin in 1958. Lorengar debuted at the Salzburg Festival in 1961 as Ilia in Idomeneo and at the Metropolitan Opera in 1966 as Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni. The artist's repertoire included roles in La traviata and Falstaff. Lorengar received the Médaille d'or du mérite des beaux-arts in 1993. The singer performed a final role in Tosca in 1991 and died on June 2, 1996, in Berlin.
