josé MarÃa Colom Rincón, better known as Josep Colom, is a Spanish classical pianist born in Barcelona on January 11, 1947. He began learning the piano as a child with his aunt, before going on to study at the Ãcole normale de musique in Paris. He won several competitions, in Santander in 1972 and 1978, and in Ãpinal in 1977, before performing throughout Europe in recitals. Revealed to Parisian audiences at the Théâtre des Champs-Ãlysées in 1979, he went on to play at the Festival de la Roque d'Anthéron, the Pablo Casals Festival in Puerto Rico and the Granada Festival with the Spanish National Orchestra. Josep Colom has become a pianist renowned for his interpretations of the modern Spanish repertoire, as evidenced by his performances of De Falla's Nuits dans les jardins d'Espagne with conductors Josep Pons in 1997 and Rafeel Frübeck de Burgos in 2001. He is also a member of several competition juries, including the Frédéric-Chopin International Competition in Warsaw, Poland. His career has seen him play with numerous European orchestras and collaborate with soloists and ensembles such as Carmen Deleito, LluÃs Claret, Joan Eric Lluna, the Tokyo Quartet, Jaime MartÃn, Abel Tomà s Realp and the London Sinfonietta or Ona Cardona.
