Biography
Tokyo String Quartet were among the most highly regarded chamber ensembles around the world from the time they formed at the Juilliard School in New York in 1969 until they retired in 2013. From 1977, they were artists in residence at the Yale School of Music with a large number of recordings and more than 100 concerts performed each year around the world. At the time of their retirement only one original member was still with the quartet, violist Kazuhide Isomura.
The original foursome studied at the Toho Gakuen School of Music in Tokyo and after they formed their ensemble and achieved success in regional competitions, they landed a recording contract. They released more than 40 albums and performed at major concert halls around the world. They were nominated for six Grammy Awards for Best Chamber Music Performance and their 2009 release 'Beethoven: String Quartets: Op. 74 & 95' went to number 42 on Billboard's Classical Albums Chart.
