Biography

Peter Zak (born May 13, 1965) is an American jazz pianist and composer from Los Angeles. Zak grew up in Ohio and studied classical piano from age six. At age 16, Zak moved to Oakland, California, where he was exposed to jazz music. Zak studied history at the University of California, Berkeley, while performing local jazz engagements. In 1989, Zak relocated to New York City and performed at venues including the Village Gate and Augie’s. Zak released the leader albums More Than Love (1989) and Purple Refrain (1991) before beginning a tenure with SteepleChase Records in 2004. His recordings for the label include Peter Zak Trio (2004), Seed of Sin (2007), Down East (2010), Nordic Noon (2011), and Standards (2014). Zak collaborated with musicians including Al Foster, Peter Washington, and Billy Drummond. In 1995, Zak joined the faculty of the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music.
