Peter and the Test Tube Babies, formed in 1978 in Peacehaven, England, emerged from a punkârock scene that favored raw energy and satirical lyrics; the original lineâup comprised Peter Bywaters on vocals, Derek âDel Strangefishâ Greening on guitar, Chris âTrapperâ Marchant on bass, and Mark âOgsâ Hoggins on drums. Their first public appearance came with the EP Zombie Creeping Flesh in 1983, followed by the EP Rotting In The Fart Sack two years later, establishing the bandâs reputation for irreverent humor. The groupâs debut studio album The Mating Sounds of South American Frogs (1983) marked a shift toward more sophisticated production, while Soberphobia (1986) is regarded as a high point in their catalogue. Subsequent releases such as The Shit Factory (1990) and Supermodels (1995) saw fluctuating commercial reception, and personnel changesâincluding the departure of Hoggins and Marchantâled to periods of instability. After a 17âyear hiatus, the band returned with That Shallot (2017) on Arising Empire, featuring collaborations with Campino and a remix of "A Foot Full of Bullets".
