Biography

A pioneering band in Brazilian rock & roll, Blitz was formed in Rio de Janeiro in 1982. "Você Não Soube Me Ama," the group's debut single, sold more than 100,000 copies during its first three months of availability, with the debut album As Aventuras de BLITZ following in late 1982. The record went gold by January 1983, with "Você Não Soube Me Amar" going platinum during the same timespan. After releasing the follow-up albums Radioatividade (1983) and BLITZ 3 (1984), the band's classic lineup — including singer Evandro Mesquita, drummer Lobão, former Os Mutantes bassist Antônio Pedro Fortuna, keyboardist William Forghieri, and backing vocalists Márcia Bulcão and Fernanda Abreu — began to splinter, with Blitz announced its official breakup on March 3, 1986. The group reunited nearly a decade later for 1994's BLITZ ao Vivo, then released 1997's Línguas and 1999's BLITZ 2000 Últimas Notícias before the year was up. By the early 2000s, Mesquita and Forghieri were the only original members in Blitz's lineup, although that didn't stop the band from continuing to record new material and tour the Spanish-speaking world. Following the release of Skute Blitz in 2009, the group earned critical acclaim for its 2016 album, Aventuras II, which was nominated for "Best Rock Album or Alternative Music in Portuguese Language" at the 2017 Latin Grammy Awards. A subsequent tour in support of that album was immortalized on the live album Blitz no Circo Voador ao Vivo in 2017, and Blitz continued earning radio airplay in Brazil with singles like 2021's "Saquarema" and 2022's "A Dois Passos do Paraíso." Supernova, the band's seventh LP, was released in 2023 and featured contributions from Roberto Frejat on "Agora É a Hora" and Fagner on "Somos Todos Índios." Blitz returned in 2025 with NuDusOutros, a 9-track album that opened with the reggae-flavored "Sentado a Beira do Caminho" featuring George Israel and Ximbinha. That year, the band suffered the loss of guitarist Rogério Meanda, who passed away on August 25, 2025.
