Biography
Otello Ermanno Profazio was an Italian cantastorie and folk singer-songwriter who was born in 1934 in Rende, Kingdom of Italy. He began his career reinterpreting traditional songs from Calabria and Sicily, as well as the poems of Ignazio Buttitta. Profazio made his professional debut in 1953 in a radio competition with the song âU' Ciucciuâ (1953). He achieved prominence in the 1960s and 1970s through radio and television appearances, including a performance on the program Questo e quello (1964). His discography includes the studio albums Calabria (1963) and Il treno del sole (1964). His career peaked with the success of the recordings Il brigante Musolino (1973) and Qua si campa d'aria (1974). The latter album sold more than 1 million copies and earned a gold disc. Profazio also presented the music program Quando la gente canta and wrote a weekly column for the newspaper Gazzetta del Sud. He died in 2023.
