Biography
Oran Etkin, born on May 18, 1979, in Israel, is a jazz and world music musician. He began playing piano at age five and later studied clarinet with Yusef Lateef and George Garzone. After moving to Boston, he attended Brandeis University and earned a master's degree in jazz from the Manhattan School of Music. His interest in Malian music led to his debut album Kelenia (2009) on Motéma Music, featuring musicians from Mali and a blend of jazz and traditional African sounds. The album includes an African version of "It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)". His subsequent albums include Gathering Light (2014) and What's New? (2015). His contributions to the children's album Healthy Food for Thought earned him Grammy Award and Independent Music Awards nominations.
