Octave One, a Detroitâbased electronic music group formed by brothers Lenny and Lawrence Burden, emerged from the cityâs techno scene in the early 1990s; the duo, along with their siblings Lorne, Lynell, and Lance, founded the independent label 430 West in 1990, contributing to Detroitâs secondâwave techno movement. Their breakthrough came with the 1989 single "I Believe" on Derrick Mayâs Transmat, followed by the Octivation EP in 1991, which established their signature sound. Throughout the 1990s, Octave One released a series of singles and EPs-including "Falling in Dub" (as Random Noise Generation) and "What Is A Dancer?"-while touring extensively as DJs and live performers and remixing tracks for artists such as Massive Attack and DJ Rolando. The 2000 single "Blackwater" marked their most commercially successful release, reâissued in 2002 by Concept Music and charting at number 47 in February and number 69 in September of that year on the UK Singles Chart. Subsequent releases included The Theory of Everything (2002) and Burn It Down (2015), with the group continuing global tours and collaborations until their latest album Patterns of Power in 2022.
