Anthony Kaczynski coâfounded Figures On A Beach in 1981 as a vocalist and keyboardist; the group formed from the remnants of the early electronic outfit Razor 1922 and added guitarist John âRikâ Rolski, keyboardist Christopher Ewen, drummer Michael Smith, and later bassist and guitarist Perry Tell. Their first independent release, the Swimming EP (1983), followed by the Breathless single (1984) and the Paradise / In Camera Obscura single (1985), established a local following and led to the compilation Paradise and Other FourâLetter Words (1986). After relocating to Boston in 1985, the band secured a deal with Sire Records, releasing the debut fullâlength album Standing on Ceremony (1987) and the selfâtitled Figures On A Beach (1989); the latter featured the cover of BachmanâTurner Overdriveâs "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet", which peaked at number 67 on the Billboard Hot 100, and the single "Accidentally 4th Street (Gloria)", which reached number 14 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart. The group disbanded in late 1992 following John âRikâ Rolskiâs departure, and Anthony Kaczynski later pursued projects such as Fireking, Future Bible Heroes, and The Magnetic Fields, while Michael Smith formed Smitt E. Smitty & the Fezztones; the bandâs legacy remains evident in the continued influence of their 1980s synthâpop output.
