Noel Jorge Nicola Reyes, born on October 7, 1946, in La Habana, Cuba, was a Cuban singer and songwriter. Coming from a musical family, he began composing songs at 13. In 1968, along with Silvio RodrÃguez and Pablo Milanés, Nicola gave his first recital at the Casa de las Américas in Havana, marking the start of the Nueva Trova movement. He served as its first director from 1972 to 1977. Notable albums include Cuba Canta a la Republica Dominicana (1975), Comienzo El Dia (1977), and Tricolor (1987). Nicola was also part of the GESI (the ICAIC's Sound Experimentation Group) and collaborated with other musicians. He passed away on August 7, 2005, in La Habana, due to lung cancer.
