Biography

As Latin pop music continued to grow into a global phenomenon, Puerto Rican reggaeton rap star Nio Garcia came to prominence when the remix of his single "Te Boté" became the most watched music video on YouTube in 2018 with over 1.45 billion views and broke into the US Top 40 despite being sung entirely in Spanish. Born Luis Antonio Quinones Garcia in San Juan, he started out as a dancer at 15 and was still in college when he began working as a choreographer, touring with local artists, making his first media appearance in the film Reggaeton: The Movie in 2013. Landing a record deal with DJ Nelson's label Flow Music, he also made a guest appearance on Klasico's track "No Hay" before releasing his debut single "Infinitamente" in 2015 and building his reputation on a Puerto Rican club scene that was thriving in the wake of the phenomenal success of Daddy Yankee. He teamed up with Bryant Myers on the hit remix tracks "Borracho & Loco" and "Volverte a Ver" and worked with Milky Woodz on "Castigo" and Tempo and Maximus Wel on "Soy Yo," before heading to Florida to record with Casper Magico in 2017 as Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico. Their mood was set not only by the devastation of the island, but also by Magico's personal struggles after his release from jail and the pair concocted a sparse, skeletal beat, pouring their heartache and anger into the downbeat, warped electro-ballad that became "Te Boté." The original track also featured an appearance from rapper Darell and was a popular and influential underground hit that broke with the ubiquitous, woozy sound of Latin trap that had swamped the scene at the time. A remix of the track in 2018, featuring reggaeton superstars Bad Bunny, Nicky Jam and Ozuna, turned "Te Boté" into an anthem and a landmark in urban South American pop. Jennifer Lopez, Wisin and Cosculluela later featured on another remix of the break-up song, while Nio Garcia went on to contribute to tracks by Reyven, Anuel AA and Pepe Quintana, before returning in 2019 with new single "Me Siento Bien" with Max Vangeli. Now or Never, his first full-length with Casper Mágico, arrived in 2020 and was followed by Anto-Nio four years later, featuring contributions from Anuel AA, Blessd, SOG, iZaak, Wisin, Brray, Juanka, Brytiago, L-Gante, and Jowell & Randy.
