New Race, a Detroit rock-styled supergroup formed in April 1981 in Sydney, featuring members of Radio Birdman: Deniz Tek, Rob Younger, and Warwick Gilbert. The group also included Ron Asheton of The Stooges and Dennis "Machine Gun" Thompson of MC5. New Race embarked on their only tour along the East Coast of Australia, performing seventeen shows. These performances were recorded with the intention of releasing a live album titled The First and the Last, which became their sole official release. The band's discography also includes two bootleg albums released by French label Revenge Records. Notable songs from these recordings include Radio Birdman originals and tracks from MC5, The Stooges, and Deniz Tekâs post-Birdman band, The Visitors. After the tour concluded, both Ron Asheton and Dennis Thompson returned to the United States to pursue new musical endeavors.
